NSGA Falls Prevention Day - September 23

Falls Prevention Awareness Day is held annually on the first day of fall – this year it’s Monday, September 23. Falls are a leading cause of injury for people aged 65 and older, but they are not an inevitable part of aging.

We want to remind you that keeping an active lifestyle is your best defense against catastrophic falls, and there is research to prove it!

  • According to the Senior Athlete Research Exam (SAFE), conducted in conjunction with National Senior Games since 2011, only 10% of Senior Games participants report falling within a year. This is one-third the rate of their age peers!
  • Active seniors are less likely to have a serious injury after having a fall. Maintaining an active lifestyle by participating in physical activity, such as Senior Games sports, can lower your risk of falling.
  • Fall-related injuries send a senior to the hospital every 11 seconds.

Please read and share these simple steps to help everyone understand how they can contribute to preventing falls!

The NSGA, in collaboration with the National Council on Aging (NCOA), has provided us with information and tips to help prevent falls.
